RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Motor Prep-course

A RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence is often the ultimate aim of skippers. It is a well known and highly respected qualification worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper.

This course is for those who hold the RYA Coastal Skipper certificate or the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal certificate of competence and who are looking to undertake the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Exam.

Course content

This is an intensive prep course to prepare you for the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore exam. The prep course is conducted by our Chief Instructor personally, a fully qualified Yachtmaster Power Instructor. During this 4 day course he will assess your ability and coach you in all the disciplines required to pass the exam.

During the course, you will take command of the yacht on passages by day and night and perfection your boat handling techniques including the Man-Over-Board recovery drill. In addition, we will brush up and sharpen your skills in passage planning, meteorology, safety at sea, maintenance, navigation, pilotage, knowledge of the International Collision Regulations and "blind" navigation.

At the end of each day our Chief Instructor will give you a debrief and coach you towards reaching the standard for a successful examination.

Each student who wishes to take the exam will be examined for 6-10 hours by an independent RYA Yachtmaster Examiner (examination fee payable to the RYA) as they skipper the yacht on short passages and complete various demonstrations of advanced skippering techniques.

Ability after the course

After succesfully passing the examination, you will receive the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence.

Supporting courses

We highly recommend participants to first follow the RYA Radar Operator, RYA Diesel Engine course and our Offshore Passage Planning masterclass.

You must hold a VHF GMDSS marine radio license. We recommend the Short Range VHF Certificate course. In addition, you need a RYA recognised First Aid Certificate.

The prep course is available as 4 consecutive days. The examination can take place on 2 later days

Previous experience:

You should have at least:

50 days sea time (5 as skipper)
2500 recorded miles of which at least half on tidal waters
5 passages over 60 miles (including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper)

Assumed knowledge:

Your knowledge of navigation, radar, diesel engine and meteorology should be to the standard of RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore theory course. You must hold a RYA recognised First Aid certificate and VHF GMDSS marine radio licence.

460 euro for the use of the yacht during the examination and the expenses of the RYA examiner
