RYA Sail practical course divided over 2 sessions including weekends

Course content

This course is available for our RYA Day Skipper and RYA Competent Crew participants. We offer the course divided over 2 weekends of 2 and 3 days.

As Day Skipper you will learn to skipper a short passage with the instructor on hand to give advice and teach you new techniques. Experience being in charge, managing your crew and your yacht, while sailing and executing teamwork manoeuvres during day-time.  Amongst other you will learn:

• Preparing a yacht for sea, including checks
• Navigation,
• position fixing,
• use of plotter and chart work
• Deck work, such as anchoring
• Pilotage for entering or leaving harbours
• Meteorology and practical weather forecasting
• Rules of the road
• Maintenance and repair work
• Diesel engine, including engine checks and fault finding
• Victualling
• Emergency procedures, including the MOB recovery drill
• Yacht handling under power and under sail
• Passage planning and making
• Night cruising 

Competent Crew participants experience living on board and really getting to know the yacht. Virtually the whole course is hands-on. You are the crew - without you the sails won't go up and the yacht won't be steered. Enjoy the sailing and learn many new nautical terms and names of parts of a yacht, her rigging and sails, sail handling, ropework, safety measures, fire precautions, personal safety equipment, executing the man-over-board drill, emergency equipment, meteorology, helmsmanship, manners and customs, rules of the road, and much more.
